...This is a modern day survival horror-y FPS. Why on earth would we have item clicking sounds or dungeon themes!?

Sorry about that >.< If you figure out how to record, you should drop a post in the applications section. The Primal forum isn't the best place to to offer general help Razz

*Feels stupid T_T*. Well, tell me what type of music you want and I will be happy to find a way to record it and upload it; two issues which I haven't found a solution to.

don't forget that you can't just take sounds from the piano and upload them. so clicking sounds and such probably won't be done on a piano, because somebody else actually made the sound, and you would be stealing it.
but music is fine. I was just envisioning less piano-y music and more ambient tone type strings instruments.

Okay, I finished a piece. Since I can't post links to places outside the forum yet, I will be in the chatroom so I can post a link to it for anyone who wants to listen.

That's a very nice piece! I love the start, as it's very calming and secure, but I think there should be a kind of heavy conflict part to it in the middle, so sort of tell the player that things have gone wrong in the games world. Then it could go back to calm and secure for the end.

I hate to go all 'English Teacher' on this music, but what I suggested above would represent a peaceful time in the lands, then the heavy conflict part would respresent a climax in the battles and gameplay, where most of the action is and where the players character is needed. The end represents when the player has done their job, and peace is restored.

(I used to hate English Teachers for their analogies, but they must've been right >.>)

Except, Kanga, I don't think one piece of music is supposed to represent an entire game. This kind of stuff would probably either be title/credits music or BGM. Especially in BGM, you need something that stays similar throughout.

That's especially true in looping background music.

What you're describing, Kanga, is refered to as "Program Music"... thing like Main Titles or backgrounds to cinematics are often Program Music- music that closely reflects a particular movement of thematic ideas... I write a lot of stuff like that, and it offers a great basis for any piece to have a change of emotion as a center. However, in most videogame music, you want it to be loopable, meaning that the listener doesn't easily discern the start and end of the piece. Sometimes this can be done by carefully constructed intros and outtros (such as an ABA construction, to get all technical). Other times, one might do this by creating an endless piece that cleanly brings itself back to the beginning without ever even "calming down".

Program music, on the other hand, often has more of an AB feel... starts one way and ends a completely different way. It deals with music in a much more wholistic and metaphorical way- characters are given motifs and the instrumentation reflects the style and action. Most films are scored in this manner, one of the finest examples being Lord of the Rings. More traditionally, one could look to the works of Richard Wagner and his Ring Cycle, a group of operas.

But that aside...

Although I often start with menu music and then work outward from there, I generally do what I call "sketches", or brief explorations of melodies, ideas, and styles before I start working on a project. That piece was more of a sketch- a piece with the sole purpose of proposing a style for the music. Unless you really like it, it probably won't end up in the final game.

@Hawk: I meant making a original composition, but uploading still is a problem. >,..,> BTW, I like the tune, sounds like something I heard from the game "Bully". Razz

Oh, I should warn you guys... I don't get most game references, so if you want to reference a game soundtrack, see if you can find a youtube of it or something. Wink

I'm glad you like it though.

It's the glockenspiel (a relative of the vibraphone and xylophone; mallet percussion) that sounds alike. I think they really used a music box sound or such.
